About

Acacia melleodora, commonly known as scented wax wattle, waxy wattle or honey wattle is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae and is endemic to arid parts of inland Australia. It is a glabrous, resinous, sticky shrub egg-shaped to lance-shaped phyllodes with the narrower end towards the base, spherical or oblong heads of golden yellow flowers and oblong to narrowly oblong, firmly papery pods.

The plant is known in the indigenous Alyawarr language as alhanker or alhepalh, in Anmatyerr it is called lkwernarr or partwert, in Kaytetye – alhepalhe, patwerte or rewelarre, in Pitjantjatjara it is known as mintju or ngarlklya and in Warlpiri – matutu, marlarntarrpa patutu, pilpirrinpa or wurpardi.

Where it grows

Scented wax wattle occurs in the southern and central parts of the Northern Territory, the north western corner of South Australia, central Queensland and the Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields regions of Western Australia where it is found on dunes and sand plains growing in shallow stony, or red sandy soils, often around laterite. It is usually found in open Eucalypt woodland or spinifex communities.
