About

Austrocactus bertinii is a species of succulent flowering plant in the genus Austrocactus, within the family Cactaceae. It is native to southern Chile and central and southern Argentina.

How to grow it

Austrocactus bertinii is cultivated as an ornamental plant for its cold-hardiness and attractiveness. Its cultivation is relatively simple, provided that it is kept dry in autumn and winter. It can tolerate temperatures down to -18 ºC (-0.4 ºF) in dry conditions, and in fact often requires a cold period in the winter for optimum growth and flowering in cultivation.

It grows best in full sun and in well-drained mineral substrates. During its growing season, it requires regular irrigation, but the substrate should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, it should be kept dry; even excessive humidity can cause its roots to rot. When fertilizing, it is recommended to use low-nitrogen fertilizers with higher proportions of phosphorus and potassium during the growing season.

Where it grows

Austrocactus bertinii has a native distribution that extends from the province of Aysén in southern Chile to Argentina. In Argentina, it is found mainly along the Atlantic coast of northern Santa Cruz province, as well as in the provinces of Chubut and Río Negro. It is also found in areas around the Río Negro, Colorado, Neuquén, and Grande rivers in the provinces of Río Negro, La Pampa, Neuquén, and Mendoza.
