About

Pinus balfouriana, the foxtail pine, is a rare high-elevation pine that is endemic to California, United States. One of three species of bristlecone pines (family Pinaceae, genus Pinus, subsection Balfourianae), P. balfouriana is closely related to the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain bristlecone pines. Although these three species can hybridize in cultivation, their ranges do not overlap, and hybridization has not been demonstrated in wild populations.

Where it grows

P. balfouriana is a tree line species, with two subspecies currently recognized. The two subspecies occur in two geographically distinct populations. P. balfouriana var. balfouriana occurs in the subalpine forest at an elevation of 1,950–2,750 m (6,400–9,020 ft) in the Klamath Mountains, while P. balfouriana var. austrina is found in pure or nearly pure stands at an elevation of 2,750–3,650 m (9,020–11,980 ft) in the southern Sierra Nevada, around the headwaters of the Kings, Kern and Kaweah Rivers (in the area around Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks).
